Zeolite as a Mycotoxin Binder in Animal Feed: What Laboratory Tests Actually Show

Mycotoxins are one of the most expensive hidden problems in livestock and poultry production. Aflatoxins, zearalenone and T-2 toxin enter the feed with contaminated grain, and even at low levels they reduce weight gain, damage the liver and weaken immunity. One of the oldest and most affordable tools against them is natural zeolite. But how well does zeolite really bind mycotoxins, and which ones? This article looks at independent laboratory data and published research, including tests of the activated zeolite that Israway supplies.

How zeolite binds toxins

Natural zeolite (clinoptilolite) is a porous aluminosilicate mineral. Its crystal lattice carries a negative charge and contains a network of channels about 0.4 nm wide. Molecules and ions of the right size and charge are trapped on its surface and inside its pores, while the zeolite itself passes through the digestive tract without being absorbed and leaves the body with the manure.

The Israway zeolite complex is a natural clinoptilolite–montmorillonite blend (15–30% clinoptilolite, 20–30% montmorillonite). Montmorillonite is a swelling clay that adds a second, layered binding surface. The product is thermally activated during production.

What the laboratory tested

In 2017 the Leningrad Interregional Veterinary Laboratory (Rosselkhoznadzor testing centre, St. Petersburg) tested the mineral zeolite-containing feed additive ZEOL (TU 10.91.10-002-27860096-2017) for its ability to bind three mycotoxins. Protocol No. 63128.

The test imitated digestion in two steps:

  1. Adsorption in the stomach: pH 3.5, 37 °C, 1 hour of mixing, with the toxin at the maximum permitted level for compound feed.

  2. Desorption in the intestine: pH 7.3, 37 °C, 3 hours. This checks whether the toxin is released again once the pH rises.

The figure that matters is the final sorption capacity: how much toxin stays bound after both steps.

  • Aflatoxin B1: 100% adsorbed in the "stomach", 0% released in the "intestine". Final binding: 100%.

  • Zearalenone: 44% adsorbed, 43.5% of the bound amount released. Final binding: 25%.

  • T-2 toxin: 33% adsorbed, 83.6% of the bound amount released. Final binding: 5.4%.

What this means for your feed

Aflatoxins: excellent. Aflatoxin B1 was bound completely and was not released at intestinal pH. This matches decades of published research. In a controlled trial with 360 broiler chickens (Oğuz et al., Research in Veterinary Science, 2000), birds received feed contaminated with 2.5 mg/kg aflatoxin. Adding 1.5% or 2.5% clinoptilolite to the diet substantially reduced the negative effects on blood proteins, albumin and blood cell counts. Related studies by the same group, published in British Poultry Science, looked at growth performance and organ damage and reached similar conclusions.

Zearalenone: partial. About a quarter of the zearalenone stayed bound. That is useful as part of a programme, but zeolite alone is not a complete solution for zearalenone-contaminated feed.

T-2 toxin: weak. Only 5.4% remained bound. Like most mineral binders, zeolite has little effect on trichothecenes. For feed with a T-2 or DON risk, zeolite should be combined with other products, such as yeast-cell-wall or enzyme-based detoxifiers.

This honest picture is the main practical takeaway. Zeolite is a cost-effective, reliable aflatoxin binder and a good base for a broader mycotoxin programme, not a universal answer to every toxin.

Additional benefits beyond toxin binding

Because the same porous structure also binds ammonium ions and excess moisture, zeolite in feed is also associated with:

  • lower ammonia levels in barns and poultry houses;

  • drier litter and manure;

  • better flowability and less caking of premixes and compound feed.

The Israway zeolite also contains naturally occurring calcium. An independent chemical analysis by Kazan National Research Technological University (KNITU, 2017) measured about 15% CaO.

Dosage and regulatory status

Typical inclusion rates in practice range from about 1% to 2.5% of the feed, as in the broiler studies above. Always follow the rules of your market and the advice of your nutritionist. Regulatory status differs from region to region:

  • In the Eurasian Economic Union, the product is manufactured under Russian technical specifications for feed additives and is covered by an EAEU Declaration of Conformity.

  • In the European Union, clinoptilolite feed additives are authorised under specific regulations with their own purity and dosage conditions. For example, Regulation (EU) No 651/2013 covers clinoptilolite of sedimentary origin (1g568).

If you import into a regulated market, contact us and we will provide the documents your authorities or customers require.

Summary

  • Natural zeolite bound 100% of aflatoxin B1 in independent laboratory testing, with no release at intestinal pH.

  • It gives partial protection against zearalenone and little protection against T-2 toxin, so combine it with other binders where these toxins are a risk.

  • It is safe, it is not absorbed by the animal, and it also improves the barn environment and feed handling.

Israway supplies activated natural zeolite in bulk (25 kg bags or 1000 kg big bags, container shipments worldwide) with laboratory reports and conformity documents.
